Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that is concerned with diseases that affect the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside a tooth). Dental pulp is an important part of the root as it communicates with the surrounding tissues of the jaw. Diseases related to the interior portion of the tooth manifest themselves with swelling or infection of the area, and are colloquially called a toothache.

The affected teeth will be completely rebuilt with incrustations or with crowns made of porcelain or ceramic depending on the condition of the tooth. If the tooth decay is severe but the tooth is still salvageable, the root can serve as a support for a crown.
